Mezzanines are semi-permanent floor systems typically
installed within buildings, built between two permanent original stories.
Used as space-savers,
mezzanines economically augment usable space and can be tailored to your
specific needs. Free standing mezzanines use structural steel for support
and can be moved from area to area. A rack supported mezzanine is ideal for
shelving and storage. The area below the device is made for maximum storage
space with the use of pallet racking.
All elevated steel mezzanine structures are designed with movement allowed, commonly known as lateral movement (sway) and deflection (deck sage or bounce). Lesser quality or lighter designed warehouse mezzanine systems will have more noticeable movement; even when all the basic details (load rated capacity and column arrangement) look the same.

Decks or flooring surfaces come with an abundance of choices. Your choice will be based on your application but is generally composed of wood product finished floor or a heavy duty steel, aluminum or fiberglass grating.
Staircases can come
with open or closed risers, and an option of open or closed tread. The staircase
placement will depend on how the mezzanine is designed and how it fits into the
warehouse. You also have the option of straight, “L” shaped, or “U” shaped
staircases. Additional ladders with or without man cages can be added to
increase access.
In a variety of special applications many mezzanines require gates, rails,
landings, and vertical reciprocating conveyors. Hand rails increase
employee protection and can have up to 3 rails and kick plates. Gate
choices can include: swing, sliding, lift-out and many more.
